Over the weekend I began reading some of the writings of Simone Weil, a philosopher, theologian, critic, sociologist and political activist. I was fascinated by one of her writings on love in particular because it sounded so similar to the writings of Watchman Nee on the topic of affection. Watchman Nee is a Chinese writer and church leader who was martyred for his faith in 1972. I was intrigued at how astonishingly similar the claims each of them make are, coming from such different life experiences, yet serving the same God. The transcendent work of the spirit is awesome.
A bic pen drawing in my sketchbook.
“Love of God is pure when joy and suffering inspire an equal degree of gratitude.”
- Simone Weil
“Pure love of creatures is not love in God, but love which has passed through God as through fire. Love which detaches itself completely from creatures to ascend to God and comes down again associated with the creative love of God. Thus the two opposites which rend human love are united: to love the beloved being just as he is, and to want to recreate him.”
- Simone Weil
